der verborgene garten.
kunstverein muensterland. coesfeld. 2014.
At first glance the exhibition at the Kunstverein Muensterland is a fairytale world in a site where there used to be a flower shop. A second look though poses many questions of a cultural historical, historical and philosophical nature. The oriental garden has cultural historical connections to our tradition.
My work is about the subconscious, about individual and collective memories. The two portraits in the entrance are disguised, to show that you are meant to place yourself into another world. Their eyes are shut and they lead into a world of imagination. There are references to art history: the title ‚The hidden garden‘ is essentially a theme from the Middle Ages, a Virgin Mary motif, and in my work relates to an even older tradition,
namely the Song of Songs.
Architecture, based on the Alhambra, is shown on a frieze. My own experiences flow into my works. For example we found three water bowls during a visit to the Alhambra, which posed us riddles. They were standing in strange spots, hidden and their function was not clear. I got the fixed idea that they might be gateways to another world. They can now be seen in my work.
