St Francis of Assisi and his living nativity scene in Greccio are the starting point for this project. St Francis wanted the nativity scene to make the Christmas message tangible for people and for them to see this message ‘with the eyes of the body’. The large-format projection, which is also experienced aesthetically with the body, therefore focuses on aesthetic experience and comprehension with the heart and hand.
Primary school children from the Marienschule Telgte, their teacher and two Franciscan priests were asked what ‘grips’ them at Christmas (or similar festivals), what they perceive ‘with the eyes of their body’. The answers were drawn and painted, and the interviewees themselves were filmed in front of a green screen, which they walked towards.
Now the real people go into their extended reality, into what grips them, in order to immerse themselves in it with their whole body.
