la folie. ostbevern. 2018.
The exhibition space ‘La Folie’ is located directly on the pilgrimage route from Osnabrück to Telgte, where the Sorrowful Mother is venerated. With the title ‘Golden Chamber’, I create an analogy to the ossuary of St Ursula’s Church in Cologne, in which precious decorated bones, which according to legend come from St Ursula and her noble companions, were arranged into ornamental mosaics on the walls. Unlike the sacred model, however, in ‘La Folie’ the gold is replaced by profane metallised rescue foils and the candles that make the gold in the ossuary glow are replaced by slide and overhead projectors. This work is by no means to be understood as an ironic examination of ideas of faith, but rather draws analogies between the baroque Gesamtkunstwerk in the Cologne church, which offers the faithful the opportunity to ask for help and salvation in front of the relic as a representative, and the modern rescue foils, which only develop their effectiveness through feedback with the person seeking help. Here it is body heat, there it is faith. This connection is emphasised by the handwritten words ‘salvation’ and ‘rescue’ projected onto the foil.
