Börstel convent is a former Cistercian nunnery and, according to the old Cistercian tradition, is located an hour’s walk from the nearest town. Since the Peace of Westphalia, Börstel has been a Protestant convent which reserves two places for Catholic nuns. The centrepiece of the convent is St. Mary’s Church and the preserved cloister attached to the church, in the inner courtyard of which is the former cemetery. Later, convent and congregation members were buried in the forest cemetery about 400 metres from the monastery.
The light installation, consisting of soot-covered slides from which drawings have been scratched out, slide projectors and green velvet cushions, evokes memories of convent and monastery life, gives an idea of the chants and unites the crosses of the forest cemetery with the graves in the cloister courtyard.
